It’s best to put down what you’d most like to do as your first preference, regardless of the required ATAR score. If you don’t make your first preference, you’ll still get an offer in the first round of offers, it’ll just be what you next qualify for in your list. If you play it safe, you may get stuck with a course you don’t really want to do and risk missing out on the course you do want.

Check out our course pages to get started.

If you have your heart set on one course, a great option is to fill up your lower preferences with courses that can lead into it as a pathway.

For example, if you want to be a vet, your first preference should be Veterinary Science. However, it’s possible to transfer to vet after you have completed a year of science at Murdoch, so you could choose courses such as Animal Science or Animal Health for your lower preferences.

This way, if you miss out on your first preference you can start out studying in a related field before moving into the course you want to do, keeping you on the right path to your chosen career.

As a safety measure, choose a course that you’re pretty sure you can get into as one of your lower preferences, to reduce the risk of missing out completely. It’s easy to change courses (or even universities!) once you’ve started at university, especially if you do well in your first semester.

If you miss out on securing a place at university, don’t worry! Murdoch offers a range of free enabling courses that allow you to apply directly to Murdoch for admission into any course that has a minimum Selection Rank of 70.

For students with multiple interests, it’s handy to know you may be able to add a second major to your course after you have been accepted for one major. For instance, you could combine Games Art & Design with a business major to broaden your career opportunities.

You can apply for a double major through MyAnswers, once you’ve been accepted into Murdoch for your original course.
